Starting October 16, Edinburgh Castle is introducing guided tours exploring the dark and lesser-known tales of the Scottish fortress, complementing its regular heritage offerings.
A New Themed Route Starting October 16
Beginning October 16, the public can experience brand-new guided tours dedicated to dark history at the heart of Edinburgh Castle. Designed to highlight the lesser-known aspects and turbulent past of the famous fortress, this seasonal program adds to the diverse ways visitors can explore the site throughout the year.
This themed experience takes place within one of Europe's most iconic historic landmarks, overlooking the center of the capital of Scotland. Often hailed as the defender of the nation, the site is preparing dedicated time slots to recount the mysteries, conflicts, and secrets that shaped past centuries within its ramparts.
Visitor Access and Experience Options
Edinburgh Castle opens daily from 9:30 am. Due to high visitor demand and tickets frequently selling out well in advance, it is essential to book tickets online to guarantee entry to the historic grounds and secure the best rate.
To tour the landmark, several self-guided and accompanied options are available. Visitors can choose an audio guide directly on their own mobile phone or on a dedicated device provided on site, as well as follow recommended itineraries linking key points of interest.
Must-see highlights featured across the grounds include the Royal Palace, the Honours of Scotland, the famous Mons Meg cannon, and the Scottish National War Memorial. History enthusiasts can also subscribe to the official blog to receive the monument's latest stories and secrets directly by email.

A Season Highlighted by Holiday Events and Receptions
Alongside these autumn historical explorations, the site is preparing its year-end festivities. The Christmas at the Castle event will run from November 18 to December 31, transforming the fortress with enchanting decorations, a festive atmosphere, and seasonal dining options.
A special Christmas Afternoon Tea package will be available from December 1 to January 3, excluding December 25 and 26. It includes castle admission alongside a gourmet dining experience within the complex.
Beyond standard sightseeing tours, the venue also hosts private receptions, corporate dinners, weddings and civil ceremonies, as well as hospitality packages arranged in connection with the Military Tattoo.
