At Herculaneum, the August 7 night openings have already set a record before the summer break
The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum is holding the last summer appointment of the “Venerdì di Ercolano” on Friday, August 7, from 8 p.m. to midnight, before a special return on September 26. After five evenings, the 2026 season has already surpassed the 2025 attendance record.
One last Friday before the summer break
On Friday, August 7, the Archaeological Park of Ercolano hosts the final “Venerdì di Ercolano” appointment before the summer break. The evening is scheduled from 8 p.m. to midnight at the ancient site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the public, it is therefore the last chance of the summer season to explore the ruins by night before the program is interrupted.
The series is not stopping for good, however. After this date, it is due to return on Saturday, September 26, 2026, for a special evening organized for the European Heritage Days. This calendar gives the August 7 event a particular status: it closes the summer sequence, while also preparing one final extension in early autumn.
Attendance already above the 2025 record
The most striking figure comes even before the final evening in August: after five appointments, on July 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, the 2026 season already totals 4,852 visitors. That level surpasses the total for the whole 2025 edition, which had reached 4,404 visitors and had until now been the record for the series.
The increase is clear when these results are placed in the recent series. The Park reports 2,509 visitors in 2023, then 2,487 in 2024, before the jump in 2025. The 2026 edition already surpasses those three full seasons, even though the August 7 appointment and the special September evening still remain.
Herculaneum on stage, between domus and light
For this ninth edition, the night openings turn Herculaneum into an evening route. Visitors are not invited to a simple linear visit: they move through an illuminated itinerary and encounter performances across the spaces of the site. The experience draws on the domus lit for the occasion, in an atmosphere the Park presents as more sensory than an ordinary visit.
The 2026 theme, “Amore e Guerra,” runs through seven site-specific performances spread across different archaeological settings. Each offering is repeated cyclically during the evening, allowing visitors to move freely and set their own pace of discovery among remains, music and ancient words.
Two time slots for a night visit
The practical timings are clearly set: the night opening runs from 8 p.m. to midnight, with two announced tours, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and then from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. This organization limits flows and spreads entries across the evening, in a site where the availability of places per tour is presented as limited.
Two entrances are indicated for the evening: Corso Resina 187 and Via dei Papiri Ercolanesi 19. The Park’s main page also notes the presence of visitor facilities, including toilets, ticket office, information desk, refreshment area, picnic area and route for visitors with disabilities, in the site’s general map.
Tickets, reductions and booking
The full price is set at 10 euros. The reduced rate is 5 euros for European Union citizens aged from 18 to under 25. Free admission applies to minors, people with disabilities and their companions, with mandatory booking in this last set of conditions communicated by the Park.
Purchases are made online at ercolano.coopculture.it or by phone through the call center at +39 081 0106490, open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding public holidays. The Park recommends booking in advance, because tickets for August 7 are already partly sold and places remain limited for each tour.
A program designed for the mildest hour
The choice of the 8 p.m.-midnight slot is not only logistical. The Park presents this moment as the most pleasant part of the day for an open-air walk, between the warm light of sunset and the suspended atmosphere of the lit ancient houses. The evening thus claims a sensory experience, not only a heritage one.
The practical advice remains simple: wear low, comfortable shoes, bring insect repellent and anticipate ticket purchases. These recommendations recall that the event takes place outdoors, on a nocturnal archaeological route where walking comfort matters as much as access to the performances.
The Park presents a living heritage
In the Park’s communication, director Federica Colaiacomo links public success to a strategy of enhancement. She emphasizes steady growth, a larger audience attached to the series, then gives an appointment in September for the final special evening connected with the European Heritage Days.
Her message also stresses the idea of a living archaeological site, open to dialogue with the languages of the present. In this reading, the ancient city becomes a meeting place between memory and creativity, carried by music, stage speech and the lighting of ancient spaces.
What remains before September
The August 7 evening therefore concentrates several issues: it closes the summer phase, may add new visitors to an already record season and still offers night access to the seven performances of the “Amore e Guerra” theme. For those who want to see the site from this angle, the practical information to remember is clear: two tours, limited places, booking recommended.
After this date, the calendar shifts to September 26, 2026. The series will then resume for one final special appointment, as part of the European Heritage Days. The 2026 record is therefore not yet fixed: it will continue to be measured after the summer, once the final evening has been added to the total.
