In Ercolano, the Archaeological Park will stay open on August 15 despite record crowds

The Archaeological Park of Ercolano confirms that it will open for Ferragosto, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., after a sharply rising month of July. Visitors are encouraged to book online and prepare for a visit adapted to intense heat.

Opening maintained for Ferragosto

The Archaeological Park of Ercolano will not close for Ferragosto. The site has announced regular opening on August 15, with its usual summer hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and last admission set at 6:00 p.m. For visitors in the region on this closely followed day in Italy, the information has an immediate practical consequence: visiting the site remains possible, with no special arrangement announced, under the hours already applied during the summer.

The entrances remain the usual ones, from Corso Resina 187 and from Via dei Papiri Ercolanesi 19. The park presents this opening as an invitation to discover a remarkably preserved ancient Roman city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, at a time when demand for cultural visits is rising sharply at the site.

August 15 in a preserved Roman city

A few days before Ferragosto, the park’s communication emphasizes the visit experience itself. Ercolano notes that the public can spend the day among the places, stories and remains of a Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. For an English-speaking reader, the name Herculaneum refers to this same ancient city, whose preservation is now what makes the archaeological route so distinctive.

Director Federica Colaiacomo presents this opening as an opportunity to experience culture in the open air, at a time when visitor numbers show renewed interest. She also stresses the idea of a visit that is both comfortable and evocative, allowing time to explore the spaces and objects that tell the story of the ancient city.

July confirms strong momentum

The announcement of the August 15 opening comes after a month of July described by the park as record-setting. In July 2026, Ercolano welcomed 44,985 visitors. That represents an increase of 6.8% compared with the 42,110 visitors in July 2025, and 16.9% compared with the 38,474 visitors in July 2024. The park specifies that this is the fifth-best July in its historical series.

This rise does not concern only one weekend or a standalone event. The statement also underlines that the period from January to July 2026 represents the third-best start to the year in the park’s recent history. In this context, the Ferragosto opening fits into a season in which Ercolano is asserting its place among the most visited cultural destinations of the Campanian summer.

Book and protect yourself from the heat

The park recommends buying tickets online in advance, in order to limit waiting time at the ticket office. This guidance is especially useful for a day such as August 15, when the opening may attract visitors hoping to organize a cultural outing during the summer period. The statement does not change the entrances or the hours, but it clearly encourages visitors to plan ahead.

The practical recommendations also concern visiting conditions. Because of the high temperatures during the period, visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring sun protection, a hat, a light parasol or umbrella, as well as a supply of water. The message is simple: the visit remains open, but it must be prepared so that it can take place safely and as comfortably as possible.

Friday evenings sold out

The rise in visitor numbers comes alongside the success of the “Venerdì di Ercolano,” the series of night openings organized for its ninth edition. The park states that the evening of Friday, August 7, sold out, as did the previous evening. This performance adds a concrete sign to the summer momentum: the public is not coming only during the day, it is also responding to the nighttime cultural offerings.

After the final summer evening on August 7, the series takes a break before returning on Saturday, September 26, for the European Heritage Days. The park then announces a nighttime format with theater, music and dance performances in the illuminated archaeological area, offering another way to experience the site after the hottest part of the season.

Before September, another cultural event

Between Ferragosto and the return of the “Venerdì di Ercolano,” the park is also announcing “Gli Ozi di Ercole.” The event will take place from September 10 to 12, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, on the Antica Spiaggia transformed into an open-air stage. The 2026 edition is titled “Amore e guerra” and combines lecture-performances, theatrical readings and concerts.

The program cited by the park notably brings together Lucia Mascino, Laura Pepe, Ambrogio Sparagna and Raffaello Simeoni, Carmen Gallo, Isabella Ragonese, Silvia Romani, Carlo Boccadoro, Gennaro Carillo, Federica Fracassi and Francesco Di Bella. The announced tickets are priced at 10 euros for the full rate, 5 euros for the reduced rate, and 15 euros for a pass to all three evenings.

What visitors should remember

For Ferragosto, the central information comes down to a few points: the Archaeological Park of Ercolano will be open on August 15, the summer hours remain set from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and last admission will take place at 6:00 p.m. Visitors can enter via Corso Resina 187 or Via dei Papiri Ercolanesi 19, with a strong recommendation to buy online before arriving.

This opening comes in a season in which the site is recording solid visitor results, with July 2026 higher than those of 2025 and 2024. It also precedes several cultural events in September. For visitors, the signal is twofold: Ercolano remains accessible on August 15, and the rest of the season retains an already announced nighttime and artistic program.
