Château de Montsoreau: The Contemporary Art Museum Open Daily from 12 PM to 6 PM

At the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers, the Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art welcomes visitors to the heart of the Loire Valley with the world's largest collection dedicated to the Art & Language collective.

A pioneering architectural setting directly in the riverbed

In the heart of the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, Montsoreau Castle stands out for its unique geographical and architectural setting. Built in Maine-et-Loire, in the municipality of Montsoreau situated between Angers and Tours, the building features the remarkable distinction of being the only Loire castle built directly in the riverbed. It was erected on a rocky promontory located precisely within the flow of the Loire, at the exact point where the Vienne river flows into it, making it the widest river in France.

The monument's architecture also represents a pioneering milestone of the Renaissance in France. Built in 1450, it is one of the very first examples of pleasure architecture in the Loire Valley. Its construction was led by Jean II de Chambes, one of the wealthiest men in the kingdom at the time. First councillor to Kings Charles VII and Louis XI, ambassador to Venice, and associate of Jacques Cœur, Jean II de Chambes brought an avant-garde design whose uniqueness is explained as much by his diplomatic travels as by the scale of his personal fortune.

Home to the world's largest collection dedicated to Art & Language

Since April 2016, the monument has transformed into an artistic center under the name Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art. This public opening was made possible through close collaboration between collector Philippe Méaille and the Maine-et-Loire department. This institutional and cultural choice was jointly based on the site's exceptional Renaissance architecture and its geographical location in the heart of the Loire Valley, a region with a strong identity that attracts a diverse international audience.

The museum houses the world's largest collection of works dedicated to the Art & Language movement, a pioneer of conceptual art. The name was adopted alongside the founding, in 1968, of the Art-Language journal, a publication that had a decisive influence on contemporary practices. From the 1960s onward, Art & Language theorized a radical separation between the art object and the art work. In 1986, the collective was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize.

Throughout its history, the collective brought together a large number of major artistic and theoretical figures: Michael Baldwin, Mel Ramsden, Charles Harrison, Joseph Kosuth, Terry Atkinson, Harold Hurrell, David Bainbridge, Andrew Menard, Michael Corris, Ian Burn, Philip Pilkington, Kathryn Bigelow, David Rushton, Mayo Thompson, Sarah Charlesworth, Christine Koslov, Paula Ramsden, Preston Heller, Lynn Lemaster, Graham Howard, Sandra Harrison, Nigel Powell, Terry Smith, and Nigel Lendon.
