In Naples, Piazza Municipio Hosts Isolympia from September 23 to 27

The 6th edition of Isolympia brings the ancient Sebastà Isolympia back into the spotlight with a program combining sport, dance, music, theater, workshops and reenactments, from September 23 to 27 in Naples.

An Opening Ceremony Imagined as the Return of the Ancient Stadium

The 6th edition of Isolympia will open on September 23 at 8 p.m. in Piazza Municipio, with an inaugural ceremony designed as a major spectacle. The event explicitly carries the theme of “Napoli Capitale,” as part of Naples European Capital of Sport 2026. The municipality presents this edition as the reactivation of a Neapolitan cultural heritage rather than a simple commemoration of the past.

The evening will be hosted by Alessandro Incerto, actor, and Mariù Adamo, journalist, writer and presenter. It will also officially open the European Week of Sport for Italy’s ACES European capitals and cities. The announced program includes costumed reenactments with hundreds of participants, an original choreography by Alessandra Vacca, the participation of dancer Elisabetta Carnevale, live music by the Ensemble of the Naples Conservatory “San Pietro a Majella,” and guests from the worlds of sport and art.

Piazza Municipio Becomes Isolympia’s Scenic Heart

The announced setup gives Piazza Municipio a central role. For one evening, the square is set to become the ancient stadium of Neápolis again, before hosting part of the artistic competitions, sports demonstrations, workshops, masterclasses and evening theater performances. Isolympia thus presents itself as an urban festival where sport and the arts share the same public space.

Naples’ heritage setting also appears in the municipal documentation devoted to Castel Nuovo. The monument is presented as a complex now dedicated to cultural use, home to the Civic Museum, with a museum route that notably passes through the Armoury Hall, the Palatine Chapel, the Charles V Hall and the Loggia Hall. This cultural presence around the historic center strengthens the context in which Isolympia combines memory, spectacle and contemporary practices.

An Ancient Reference Reactivated for Naples 2026

Isolympia revives, in an updated form, the Sebastà Isolympia instituted by Augustus and organized for more than three centuries. The official page recalls that they were “similar to those of Olympia” and that they were among the best-known Greek-style agons in the Mediterranean during the imperial period. For Naples, the stated aim is therefore twofold: to recall a sporting and artistic heritage, then bring it back to life through a contemporary program.

This 6th edition is dedicated to Naples European Capital of Sport 2026. The official message sums up the intention in a clear formula: not to celebrate the past, but to set it in motion again. The concrete translation of this idea comes through a program mixing sport, dance, music, theater, workshops, reenactments and performances, with audiences ranging from pupils to families, from visitors to adult competitors.

Pupils Enter Competition on September 24 and 25

The Youth section will take place on September 24 and 25. It retains the dual register specific to Isolympia, both sporting and artistic, with a section dedicated to schools and carried out in collaboration with USR Campania. The announced participants are pupils from across Campania, from lower and upper secondary education.

The light and heavy athletics competitions will take place at the Parco Virgiliano athletics field, already the site of the first edition of Isolympia in 2013. The pupils’ artistic competitions, meanwhile, will take place on the stage installed in Piazza Municipio. For the occasion, this space will take on the function of a Gymnasium, extending the dialogue between physical and artistic disciplines.

A Gymnasium Open from September 24 to 27

From September 24 to 27, Piazza Municipio will function as a Gymnasium throughout the event. The announced program there includes sports demonstrations, literary meetings, educational and theater workshops, as well as masterclasses. The intended audience is broad: students, families, visitors of all ages and from all backgrounds.

This choice gives Isolympia a dimension more continuous than a simple calendar of competitions. Between the events, workshops and meetings, the square is expected to remain active for several days, with different formats depending on the moment. The stated logic is that of a permanent encounter between sporting practice, cultural transmission and the performing arts.

Adults Compete Between Piazza Municipio, Collana and Posillipo

The adult competitions are scheduled for Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27. They will again take place in Piazza Municipio, but also at Stadio Collana and Circolo Posillipo. The program maintains the same articulation between sporting and artistic events, widening the scope of the manifestation beyond the central square.

Every evening, the Piazza Municipio stage will become the Teatro di Neàpolis. National theater companies will present performances linked to the theme of the 6th edition: “Terra! Terra! One Earth, One Land, One World.” The official page specifies that this theme opens the field to multiple artistic interpretations.

The evening of September 26 will welcome “Parolenote” by Giancarlo Cattaneo, from Radio Montecarlo, and Maurizio Rossato, from Radio Deejay. The show is announced as an encounter between several artistic languages, specially adapted to the theme of the edition. It will also accompany the award ceremony for the new talents who win this 6th edition of Isolympia.
